Courting Candle Holders made by our very own volunteer blacksmiths are sure to bring out that "wow" factor the next time you have guests over. A common legend with the courting candle was that it was used to dictate how long a young lad in the 18th and 19th centuries could visit with young lady and her family's house. If the lady was interested in the boy, she might raise the cork in the spiral to spend more time with him. However, if father was rather disapproving, perhaps he would lower the candle and cut the date short.
More practically, it was useful for keeping tallow candles from burning unevenly, and with an adjustable cork insert in the spiral, one could have a simple timer to use in the evenings.
